LEMOINE'S DIAMONDS.
Paris, June 18; Lemoine, who is charged with swindling Sir Julius Wernher of on pretence that he can manufacture diamonds, and who was liberated on bail to give him a chance to prove his skill, has fled. The envelope which was deposited with the Union of London and Smith’s Bank, and which was supposed to contain the formula for the manufacture of the diamonds, has been opened. It stated :
“Take powdered sugar and carbon, place them in a crucible, and raise the temperature of the furnace to 1700 or ISOO degrees Centigrade. Thus obtain crystallisation. Next apply pressure to he lid. The diamonds are then i ade.”
Experts describe the formula as excellent hoax. •a a letter to the magistrate, .loine states that the owner of Jctory impeded his experiments.
I, these experiments were brought ; a successful conclusion elseiere, be would re-appear and conmud his detractors.
A warrant has been issued for ais arrest.
