WERE GROWING OLD!

Wi! are sorry to have to admit that, in point of citizenship and progress, our neighbouring borough, Levin, completely puts Foxton in the shade. At its last Council meeting, in response to the invitation from the Premier to send a representative flag to welcome the American fleet, not only did it accede to the request, but it decided to send a telegram of welcome to the fleet from its citizens. What a marked contrast to Foxton’s action ! No opportunity is allowed to pass, whereby its public institutions may be brought up to date. Here is an instance : “At the last Council meeting it was stated that owing to the fact that work at the local courthouse had increased so considerably of late, and that the chief constable has found it difficult to manage both his duties as constable and clerk of the court, it was decided to write to the Minister of Justice asking fora separate clerk of the court.” We shall hear shortly of a Clerk of the Court being appointed for Levin. The borough that asserts itself, is bound to get a hearing. In our opinion, Foxton, from a commercial point of view, is a more important centre than Levin; yet we lack citizenship and enterprise. We allow golden opportuuites to slip past us, and burst out crying when it is too late. We want rejuvenating !
