SOROUSH COUNCIL.
Special Meeting. A special meeting of the Council was held last night for the purpose of dealing with estimate for forming and metalling of roads, dealing with gas mains and lighting Council Chambers. Present The Mayor (B. G. Gower Esq.) and Crs. Gray, Shadbolt, Jeuks, Franklaud, Hennessy, Stiles, Baker and G. Coley. An invitation was received from Palmerston to the Mayor and Councillors to be present at tbe welcome to the Governor next Thursday. Cr Coley facetiously asked whether the Councillors railway fares would be paid and whether they would be entertained at a free luncheon.
A communication was received from the Premier asking the town to send a banner with the words “ welcome from Foxton ” on it for the purpose ot welcoming the American fleet when it arrived in Auckland. The Premier suggested a banner xoft x sft in white with red lettering 9 inches long. The Mayor explained that a similar request had been sent to every borough in the Dominion and he was in accord with the sentiment. Cr. Shadbolt: —Do they want a man to carry it ? Cr. Franklaud thought that a banner should be sent. In the time to come this country might require the assistance of the American fleet to protect it against a Japanese invasion.
Cr. Stiles moved that a flag as suggested be procured and forwarded at a cost not to exceed three guineas. The res fl ution was lost, those who supported it being Crs. Stiles, Frankland, and the Mayor. The Clerk submitted an estimate for the formation and metalling on the following streets, for the carrying out of which a loan is proposed to be raisedLiddell Street, chains, 7s 96. ; Watson Street, 3 chains, £l4 os 6d; Ravensworth Place, 10 chains, £46 153; Hetta Street, 8 chains, ,£43 ; Gladstone Street, 8 chains, ; Futter Street, 10s; total, £279 13s 3d. On the motion of Cr Stiles, seconded by Cr Gray, a loan for the above purpose was authorised. Mr Ford, engineer for the Foxton Gas Proprietary, waited on the Council in reference to gas installation and street lighting. Mr Ford said the proprietary was prepared to lay the gas mains along the side of the roads as suggested by the Council, instead of the centre. He stated that a start would be made with the laying of the mains in two or three days. In reply to a question, Mr Ford said the proprietary were prepared to light and maintain the streets lamps at a cost of ,£5 each per annum. The lights to be 60 candle power each and to be lighted every night except on three nights during each lunar month. The lamps to be kept alight till midnight. He had made arrangements to have the gas ready for consumers by the first week in October.
Cr Hennessy moved and Cr Jenks seconded, That the Clerk be instructed to write to the Manawatu County Council asking that body if it will pay the cost of lighting the lamp at the corner of Purcell and Patrick Streets at present paid for by the Foxton Borough Council. —Carried. A discussion took place in reference to what action the Borough Council should take with regard to the setting up of a Royal Commission to determine the constitution of a River Board or Boards to govern the Oroua, Manawatu and Pohangina rivers. It was finally resolved that the Borough Council take no action re the River Conservation Commission.
