ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

Wellington, Last Night,

Three men were capsized from a punt in Wellington harbour tonight, owing to a heavy swell caused by a passing steamer. One of the men, James McCann, a single man, aged 35, for many years in the service of the Union Company, was drowned. Westport, June 15. At the inquest to-night touching the death of Richard Edward Kearse, evidence was given'that the ball was thrown in from the touch line in Saturday’s football match, and passed over deceased’s head and that he turned round to get it, when another player, also jumping for the ball, collided with him. Medical evidence was given of internal injuries and a verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone.
