SUPREME COURT.

Palmerston Sitting. The criminal sittings of the above Court were commenced on Tuesday. His Honor, Mr Justice Cooper, expressed pleasure that the business was very light, and congratulated the district on the comparative absence of criminal cases. He had just come from Wanganui where he had no criminal cases of any description to try. It was gratifying to find, in these country circuits, the absence of crime. Kdward Pilkington, charged with causing actual bodily harm to Thomas Smythc, painter of Pahiatua, pleaded not guilty. After hearing evidence, the jury found accused guilty of common assault and he was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. Daniel McCurdy, cab-driver of Palmerston North, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having com-: mitted perjury 011 12th February, 1908. The perjury was alleged to have been committed at a corouial enquiry into a fire which destroyed the stables in the occupation of accused, and in respect of an assertion made by him regarding the quantity of chaff destroyed therein, and the quantity purchased from a farmer at Bonny Glen. A verdict of not guilty was returned, and accused was discharged.
