- -- London Market. Dalgety and Company, Ltd-, Wellington, have received the following cable messages from their London office, dated the 4th instant : Frozen Meat. —Active demand for lamb, and the market is firmer. Poor demand for mutton, and prices are weak. There is also poor demand for beef, the market being dull owing to this cause. The following are our quotations for New Zealand frozen meat Prime crossbred lamb, Canterbury heavy, $Y&d ; light, 5?/6d ; prime crossbred lamb, North Island, heavy, sd; light, crossbred mutton, Canterbury heavy, 3d; light, 3^d; North Island heavy, 3>6d ; light, ox beef, fores, 3d ; hinds, The weather is hot and sultry. Butter : The Copenhagen official quotation remains unchanged. The total imports of butter into the United Kingdom for the week ending the 30th May amounted to 76.000 cwt, as compared with 75.000 cwt, for the corresponding week of 1907. The market is quiet, but prices are steady in consequence of small stocks. Finest 102 s. Tallow: Since our last telegram prime mutton tallow is unchanged. Good mutton, higher by 6d to qd per cwt. Good to prime mixed, is to is 6d per cwt higher. Low and inferior descriptions, 6d to gd higher. There will be no public sales of tallow next week.
Hide and Skin Report.
Dalgety and Company, limited, held their fortnightly sale of wool, skins, hides, and tallow on Friday sth instant, a good catalogue of all classes being submitted. The demand for skins showed a slight improvement on last sale, but green and damp skins were easier. Prices for heavy hides were not quite up to last sale rates, but light sorts were firmer. We quote as follows : Sheepskins. —Full-wooled x-bred, to 4}(d; x-bred, dead and broken, 3d to 3M ; fine x-bred, broken, s}4d ; x-bred, short, to 3|d ; half-bred, to to 3d ; half-bred, short, to 3fd; pelts,2j4d; lambs, short and seedy, to 3d ; lambs, dead and broken, 3d to jtd ; x-bred, damp, 1/5 to 2/6 ; lambs, damp, 1/9 to 2/-; x-bred, salted, 1/10 to 3/-. Hides. —64-lbs to 72lbs, s>6d to 6}4d per lb ; 47lbs to sqlbs, to 4^jd; 4olbs, 4^d; cut and scored, 55lbs to 6xlbs, 5d to Sy'sd. Cows.—63lbs cut and slippy, 3d to lings, 13 lbs 4d ; yearling heifers, 24lbs 354 d ; calf cut, 3d to 3%d. Tallow.—ln shipping order — 22/- to 22/3 per cwt.
Messrs Levin and Co., Limited, report as follows regarding last Friday’s sale: —We held our fortnightly sale to-day, offering a small quantity of wool and skins, 440 hides, and a quantity of tallow and horsehair. Wool: Market remains steady at last sale rates. We quote : Medium crossbred 3d to 4>4d, inferior 2d to 3d, lambs wool 4d to sd, pieces and locks id to 2d, Skins: Market steady with no quotable change. We quote : Fine crossbreds 4d to crossbreds 3d to 4d, dead skins 2d to 3d, dead hoggets i*4d to 2%d, dry pelts id to lamb skins 3d to green pelts 2s to 3s, green lambs woolly 2s to 3s, green lambs pelts is to is gd. Tallow ; Steady. Parcels in shipping order £ 22. Tins ,£ls to Rough fat to £l3. Horsehair; is to is 3d per lb. Horns : 5s to 17s 6d per hundred. Cowtails: is 6d to is 8d per doz. Hides : We had a good catalogue of well-conditioned hides, which met with excellent competition at an advance of %d per lb for heavies and mediums, and %d for lights. We quote: Ox hides heavy 6d to 6^4d, medium 6d to light 4d to sftd, cow hides 3%d to cut and slippy hides 2d to stag hides 2>£d to bull hides 2d to 3d, best calf 4d to calf cut and slippy 2d to 3d.
