PROGRESS OF THE VOLUNTEER MOVEMENT.
The application to the Government for the establishment of a volunteer corps locally has now been forwarded in, fifty-seven persons having agreed to enrol themselves as members of the corps. It is expected that a reply will be to hand in about a month’s time.
Messrs John Stevens M.P. and W. H. Field M.P. are being approached with a view to enlisting their sympathy in the movement.
Yesterday j Messrs Page and W. Barnard visited Palmerston North for the purpose of meeting Lieu-tenant-Colonel Watt, but the latter was unable to get away from Wanganui. However, Captain Mounsey—who is deeply interested in the endeavour to form a company here —has undertaken to send the application to LieutenantColonel Watt and to do his best to assist the carrying out of the project.
