LIVING ON HALF A CROWN A WEEK.
Wellington, May 26
The problem of how to live on half a crown a week is being solved by a young man, the adopted son of an old lady. This young man made a most favourable impression on the Trustees of the Benevolent Institution this afternoon.
“ What have you coming in ?” asked the chairman (the Rev. W. A. Evans) of the applicant. “ Two pounds a month ; that’s mother’s pension,” was the reply. “ What do you pay for rent?” was the next question. Seven and sixpence, sir,” replied the applicant. “We live on half a crown a week.”
The Trustees found, on close investigation, that the young man’s story was accurate in every particular, and that he was living with his mother in a house that was damp, dark, and wretched —a place that ought to be condemned. As a consequence of these conditions of living, it was stated at the Board meeting, the applicant was a victim to rheumatism, for which he was being treated at the hospital as an outpatient. The Board decided to continue rations and to make a rent allowance in order that the young man and his mother might move into healthier quarters.
