CORRESPONDENCE.

We do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed by our correspondents. fro THE EDITOR.] Sir, —The game of bluff seems to act fairly well at the Shannon ferry just now. A printed notice from the Manawatu County Council adorns the road near the bridge and displays the ignorance of the august body who have placed it there. They don’t know how to read the Public Works Act, or else they are trying the game of bluff. The Act does not permit a man to collect fares from those who do not use his ferry. It’s great fun to see a man tramping about like a roaring lion, bailing up cyclists, and demanding shillings. It’s raising the fares that gets my “ dander riz.” Some say “ I don’t blame the ferryman; I blame the Council.” Now, I reckon the Council were in a corner, as the time was up and no tenders in, so they were at the mercy of well —you know, Mr Editor. A worm willl turn if trodden on. and the public will turn too, when they feel the iron heel of monopoly. I’d rather pay to cross the bridge than be dependent upon au important Government official.—Yours etc., Fair Peay.
