The Late W. Fahey.

The news of the death of the late W. Fahey was received with deep regret by a large number of friends and acquaintances by whom the deceased had been held in much esteem. Saturday the jockeys riding at the races each wore a band of crape on the left arm as a mark of respect to their departed comrade’s memory, A few of the personal friends of the deceased paid a touching tribute on Monday evening, when they took to the hospital a large and beautiful wreath in the shape of a floral horseshoe across which were worked in violets the words “East Race,” underneath being the colours last worn by the deceased. The wreath was placed upon the coffin, which will be shipped to Invercargill where the interment will take place. The deceased jockey Fahey was particularly well known on this coast, says the Palmerston Standard, but was not one ot Fortune’s favourites, having had more than his full share of accidents. It will no doubt be remembered that it was Fahey who was so seriously injured when Federation fell at the post in Foxton a couple of years ago. During the past two years, Fahey had not done much riding but a win at the recent Takapuna meeting and one or two mounts there, together with engagements at the Wanganui meeting, seemed to indicate a change of luck for the ill-fated rider. His successes in minor events were very numerous, but his only important win was upon Haydn when he won the Grand National Hurdles in 1901. On the previous day Fahey had ridden the Poriruatrained The Guard to second place in the Grand National Steeplechase, the same stable’s Gobo, ridden by R. Arnott, winning the big event.
