The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, MAY 14, 1908. THE MOUTOA FERRY.
As some misapprehension appears to exist in the minds of the public with respect to using the partially finished Shannon-Moutoa bridge which, by the way, should be completed in a few weeks time, we refer them to a notice published by the Manawatu County Council and appearing elsewhere in this issue. It sets out :
That the public are warned against crossing over the Manawatu River within half-a-mile of the Shannon Ferry. Any one doing so is liable for Ferry charges and must pay same to the ferryman.
We hope all law-abiding settlers will respect this notice and not attempt to harass the ferryman by crossing the bridge until that- structure is officially declared open. A contract was entered into with the present ferryman by the Manawatu County Council to work the Moutoa ferry for a certain period, which period expires next October. When the bridge is officially declared open for traffic, the services of the ferryman so far as the public is concerned, are at an end. It must, however, be distinctly understood that until the bridge is officially opened, the ferry is the legal crossing, and settlers, if they desire to cross the river, must pay the toll and look pleasant.
