ARTESIAN WATER.
That artesian water can be obtained in almost any part of the borough has been again proved by the excellent rivulet flowing from the bore put down recently at Messrs Levin and Co.’s grading sheds by Mr E. J- Martin. Pure sparkling water is bubbling up and over the pipe ioft.‘ above the surface at the rate of over 1200 gallons per hour. Mr George 'Grajq some time since, bad the temerity to entrust Mr Marlin with the work of putting down a boreal the side of his hotel in Main Street, and this well proved a boon to Mr Gray and a number of other thankful householders during last summer’s drought. Messrs Wm. Ross and Sons, as stated in a previous issue of the Herald, also succeeded in securing artesian water on the rope works site. Other settlers, whose laud is adjacent to the borough, have also obtained ample water for their stock from artesian bores. The Council some time since called tenders for putting down two wells, but no tender was received, owing, we believe, to the somewhat, exacting conditions of contract. It is, however, an established fact that artesian water can be obtained, and we have it on the best authority that two wells could be put down to provide ample water for fixe prevention purposes in Main Street, at a cost under and there would be a constant stream of pure water running down the water tables. In cases of fire the water would flow into sumps, and a manual engine would be required to pump and concentrate the water on the burning structure. We shall return to this subject at a later date, but in the meantime would urge every councillor to inspect the flow at Messrs Levin and Co.’s dumping sheds.
