“TRUE” FACTS.
The following story is vouched for by several ot the prominent settlers of Gladstone, and beside it all fish yarns fade into insignificance says the Carterton News ; A man, owning a trotting flier, set out from Masterton in a light buggy to reach Gladstone. He proceeded at such a pace that he left the buggy behind, and when he reached the Gladstone post office and pulled up, he dropped to the ground. The buggy was subsequently found five miles back at Te Whiti, the last five miles of the stage being accomplished with the man retaining his sitting posture in the air. The strange part is that the driver was unaware that the buggy was not under him ! Another horse yaru, for the reputation of Carterton : A well known driver purchased an old horse, and attached the animal to the rear of the brake he was driving. Having occasion to slop at a business place, he jumped down and went inside. Meanwhile, the led horse was missing, but on coming out the owner did not nolice the absence of the aged quadruped until he tripped and fell over the trailing rope. He gazed at the rope in astonishment, wondering why it was there, and suddenly remembered his purchase. Docking back, he found his property lying in the middle of the main road last asleep, about a hundred yards from the place where he had first ■ been attached to the vehicle! Verily truth is stranger that fiction.
