THE LATE SIR H. CAMPBELLBANNERMAN.
London, April 27. The Rev. Dr. Clarke, Archbishop ol Melbourne, preaching at. St. Margaret’s (Westminster), declared that Australians mourned the close of the late Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman’s great and honourable career. He was so true to the noblest traditions of public life in Parliament and Empire. What was done by England’s Prime minister concerns the Commonwealth, as it is part of the Empire. Almost as largely as among Englishmen the services, lives and characters of great English statesmen were canvassed, discussed, known, and understood in the Commonwealth —perhaps just as much as in the Motherland. At Sir Henry Campbell-Banner-man’s funeral many marks of respect were shown. Members of the House of Commons and many peers attended. The House ot Commons adjourned for the day. The service in Westminster Abbey was before a crowded congregation. The Kaiser, the French President (M. Fallieres), and the Government of the Australian Commonwealth sent wreaths. The Australian States combined in con-, tributing a wreath. The presence of M. Clemenceau, Premier of France, caused satisfaction throughout France and Britain, and emphasised the entente cordiale* Diplomatists and many representative deputations were present, also the Hon. W. Pember Reeves, High Commissioner for New Zealand, and the Australian AgentsGeneral.
