The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 1908. BRITISH POLITICS.
Thl defeat of Mr Winston Churchill, by Mr foynston-Hicks, did not come altogether as a surprise, but it was not anticipated that the young Minister would l.e defeated by such a large majority, viz., 429. The Labourite candidate was only a circumstance in the election, he having only obtained 276 votes. At the general election Churchill defeated JoynslonHicks by a majority of 1241. The result of the poll is a distinct victory for Chamberlainism, and if only Chamberlain were fit and well at this juncture, the whole course of British political history may have changed. Mr Churchill's defeat does not mean that he will lose his poittolio. The Asquith Government will, in the long run, profit by this famous byelection.
