Details of the Casualties. Melbourne, April 23. The casualty list is now stated to be as under:— Killed 43 Injured ... ... 191 Total 234 It is officially stated that no C. S. Williams was killed, as previously reported. This reduces the total killed to 43. Six of the railway officials have been relieved from duty pending an enquiry. Mr Tait, Chief Railway Commissioner, states that the stationmaster at Sunshine gave “line clear” to both Deerpark and Sydenham, on the Ballarat and Bendigo lines respectively. This
should not have been done while another traiu was in the section, although it doe; not exonerate the drivers for disregarding the more important semaphore signals, which were against the Bendigo train. Syympathy. London Press References. London, April 22. The newspapers make sympathetic references to the railway accident at Melbourne. Melbourne, April 23. The Federal House of Representatives expressed sympathy with the sufferers by the Braybrook railway disaster.
