THE RAILWAY DISASTER.
Details of the Casualties. Melbourne, April 22. _ Definite figures are now available of the exact number ot casualties in the railway accident. They are as follows : —Total dead 43, seriously injured 45, slightly injured xoq. The driver ot the Bendigo train has been driving for 30 years, and is one of the most capable men in the service. He is almost distracted over the disaster.
The driver of the second engine felt the brakes go on, but they were suddenly released .again, and the train bounded forward on its enaud cf destruction. Bitter comments are made on utter want of preparedness of the Department to cope with the accident. It took an hour and threequarters after the summons to get a relict train away.
It is believed the compensation will cost the Government ,£120,000.
