THE TOWN CLERK.
While on municipal matters, we desire to say a few words of a complimentary nature about the Town Clerk. A Town Clerk who is able to collect the whole of the rates for the sixth year in succession deserves more than passing notice. His manner (which is not altogether akin to “the gentleman from France,’’) and method may not please everybody, but Foxton can pride itself on possessing a Town Clerk of mere than average ability, and he can put every penny of his salary into his pocket with an easy conscience. He is a most efficient officer, and keeps a wary eye on the Council’s finances. With him bad debts a:e as the proverbial red rag to the bull, and the dodger and procrastinator are brought into line at the double. Tike the man in blue, who does his duty without fear or favour, he is subject to a certain amount of abuse, but Mr Fraser can rest assured that his services are duly appreciated in the right quarter, and we congratulate him upon the excellent manner in which he has discharged his multifarious duties during the year.
