MOUTOA DRAINAGE BOARD.
Drainage Tender Accepted. There was a very long sitting of the Moutoa Drainage Board on Tuesday night. Present: Messrs Gower (chairman), F. S. Easton, J. Symons, W, Barber, Hammond, W. Bock (secretary), and T. Ward (engineer). After the minutes had been read and confirmed and correspondence from the Treasury dealt with, tenders for the drainage scheme were considered, and one from Christchurch was accepted subject to the sureties as set forth in the specifications being approved by the Board. The successful tenderer enclosed a sheaf of glowing testimonials from chairmen of local bodies in the South Island, but Engineer Ward did not, he said, place any weight on testimonials but from a personal interview with the contractor he was favorably impressed. The engineer was authorised to procure the necessary timber for the work which should be delivered in Wellington, he said in about thiee mouths time. Surprise was expressed at the freight charges on timber from Wellington to the scene of the works and it was decided to discuss this matter more fully at a later date. The engineer suggested that the banking at various points of the river should not be overlooked, and it was pointed out by several members that the banking would follow as soon as the drainage works were in progress.
Other matters in reference to calling a meeting of ratepayers and ther details in reference to the raising the loan were discussed and the meeting adjourned to a date to be fixed by the Chairman.
