SENSATIONAL STAMPEDE.
Owing to a stampede of several cabs and buggies at the Palmerston railway station on the arrival' of the Wellington train at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday, Mrs Gordon Reid, of Wellington, was slightly injured. Miss Martha Jones, of New Plymouth, bad- ribs on both sides broken, and one penetrated the lungs. Her condition is serious. Mrs Reid’s teeth were driven through her lower lip by a blow of some sort, and she is much bruised.
Eye-witnesses of the accident state that it is a marvellous thing that no one was killed and that much greater damage was not done as there were numerous vehicles at the station, and all seemed to be in a mixed up condition. The only cab that was damaged to any great extent was that containing Mr and Mrs Reid, which lost a wheel and was considerably damaged in front.
Later Particulars.
Death of Miss Jones. Miss Jones died in the Palmerston Hospital yesterday afternoon, as a result of injuries sustained through the stampede of horses on Saturday night. She was suffering severely from shock, and one of the fractured ribs penetrated the lungs. There will be a preliminary enquiry to-day. Miss Martha Jones, who was 58 years old, was in partnership with her two sisters in a grocery business at Devon St., New Plymouth.
