ORIGINAL POETRY.
“Our Fleet.”
Sing hey, for a life on the Foxtou
fleet, For the joy of a river trip, The exultant thrill as you find a
seat On the bow of a local ship. You steam ahead with a pleasant glow And think it all so grand, But for awhile as on you go There’s nothing head but sand. After you pass the Herston Mill, And strike the long straight reach, You must admire as I think you
will The willows along the beach. Their verdant branches drooping down, Touching the rippling stream, Are, after the dismal sand hills
brown, A sight for a poet’s theme Around the bends the small boats glide By swamps whose banks are low . Green flax, abundant on each side, Through which the high drains
flow. Right to the ferry we journeyed through—’Twas as far as our small ship
went ; Then back to the wharf the good
boat drew : We were pleased with a day well
spent. The Speedwell, the Planet and the
true little Kate, The Matara and Nina so neat, Are the boats that will take you as I now relate ; And here’s luck to our own Foxtou fleet.
