The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 1908. THE BEACH ROAD.

AT Tuesday night’s meeting cf the Palmerston North Borough Council, Cr Stubbs, who represented his council on the deputation which waited on the Manawatu County Council in reference to the Beach Road, reported that the cost of construction of such road would be The County Council, said Cr Stubbs, consider the amount too large for them, and suggest that as the road is of much more importance to Foxton than to Palmerston, a Royal Commission be asked for to allocate the amount which each local body should subscribe to this road. Cr Stubbs, on behalf of Palmerston disclaimed any interest in the suggested Commission, pointing out that the Beach Road was of no great value to Palmerston, and that if it was of value to anyone it was to Foxton. He is reported to have said further that the Foxton people also discountenanced the suggested Commission. Cr Stubbs’ reported remarks at the Borough Council meeting above quoted, don’t altogether square with his views as expressed at the County Council meeting. He stated at Sanson that he could not commit himself as to whether the Palmerston Borough would be prepared to bear a proportion of the cost of constructing the Beach Road, H but the completion of the road would be a boon to the travelling public. Palmerston fully recognised the advantage of the Foxton beach as a health and pleasure resort. Perhaps it was meant that money was being taken #?vay from them, but Palmerstonians did not mind that. They were all glad to get away once a year and many of them went pp Foxton.” We leave our readers to form their own opinion of Cr Stubbs, but the Beach Road will never be constructed until a Royal Commission is asked for by the County Council, which shall equitably apportion the cost of construction between tue local bodies mentioned. We hope the local Borough Council will pass a resolution at its next meeting asking the County to set up such a commit siou.- We are sure that Palmerston and Foxtpu would be prepared to pay a fair share, specially as the future upkeep of the road WQhW be under the control of the County £puncil. It is absurd to ask the CoWdy £puncil to bear the cost of construction Jhis important work alone, -and it is on the local take the initiative step. 'I
