A CALL OF SAMUEL.

In a Nottingham Council school a class of children, during their Scripture lesson, were asked to sing “ Hushed was the Evening Hymn,” which describes the call of Samuel. At the end of the first verse the teacher interrupted the singing for a brief catechism on the history, and submitted the question, “ What did Samuel do while Eli was asleep?” “Stole his watch,” was the prompt reply from one of the girls. The teacher, annoyed at the answer so senseless, and carrying so shocking an imputation Samuel’s character, called impatiently for the second verse — “ The old man, meek and mild, The Prince of Israel, slept; His watch the Temple child, The little Levite, kept.’’ Now came the child’s turn, “ Please, teacher, dosen’t that mean that Samuel kept the old man’s watch for himself.”
