A YOUTHFUL CRIMINAL.

Auckland, March 19,

Duncan R. Caldenvood, aged 16, who has bad an extraordinary career of crime, admitted in the Police Court to-day a series of tbefts of considerable extent and audacity. He came originally from Waikato, and after various sojourns at Industrial Schools was licensed to bis father, a wharf labourer, at Wellington. Four months later he shook off pareutal influence. On his way to the Dower Hutt he received accommodation in a hut, from which he disappeared, taking of his mate’s money. Proceeding by train to Napier, he purchased a pea rifle and a large quantity of ammunition, but fortunately the rifle got out of order. On reaching Auckland he annexed one bicycle and sold it for £2 10s ; stole another, and swapped it for a watch and chain. Proceeding to Tepapapa, he was befriended by Mr Angus Gordon, and rewarded his host by bolting with a horse, saddle and bridle. On the way to Mercer, he exchanged the saddle for a better one on another horse, but at Mercer he fell into the arms of a waiting policeman. The Bench sentenced Calderwood to three months’ imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be concurrent. It was stated by the Sub-Inspec-tor that the boy’s transfer to Burnham School would be speedily effected.
