MOUTOA DRAINAGE BOARD.

First Regular Meeting. The first meeting of the above Board was held in the Mayor’s room at the Council Chambers last night. Present: Messrs F. S. Easton, Gower, J. Symons, W. Barber, and J. Hammond. Messrs Ward, engineer, and Bock, acting clerk, were also present. On the motion of Messrs Easton and Hammond, Mr B. G. Gower was elected chairman and briefly thanked the • members for the honour conferred upon him, and expressed the hope that during his term of office he would satisfy the trustees, and that they would all work amicably together for the common good of the ratepayers whom they represented. . It was decided to go into committee in order to open and discuss tenders for carrying out the drainage scheme. Upon resuming, Mr Easton moved and Mr Hammond seconded that fresh tenders be invited per medium of the same, papers as previously, for the drainage works, returnable by the 6th April.— Carried. A letter was read from the Treasury Department setting forth the amount that could be borrowed by the Board, and the Act dealing with same was read and the matter fully discussed. It was decided that the calling of tenders be left in the hands of Mr Ward.

On the motion of Messrs Symons and Barber, Mr W. Bock was appointed Secretary to the Board at a salary of per annum. The Chairman was appointed treasurer, and the Bank of New Zealand was appointed the Board’s bankers. Cheques are to be signed by the Chairman and one Trustee. The order of business as outlined by the Clerk for ordinary meetings was adopted as follows: —Minutes, Treasurer’s statement, accounts, correspondence outwards and inwards, reports, tenders and general.

It was decided to take the necessary steps to sanction a loan of ,£12,000 and application be made to the Treasury for the amount of loan authorised in the Act. On the motion of the Chairman and Mr Symons, it was resolved to approach the Manawatu County Council with a view of transferring the control of the Government drain to the Board.

The matter of furnishing and office accommodation was held-over and the meeting was adjourned till this,night three weeks in order to deal with tenders.
