ORIGINAL POETRY.
When faults within my work appear, As spots upon the sun, And with its beauty As often they have done ! Let not the blame ' Besmirch-ray fame, But put it on my father’s name. And if my father went astray, As modern parents do, For him let just compassion say, “He had his parents, too,” And for their sake Allowance make For his regrettable mistake. And so the chain may still extend A thousand ages through, And prove, if I to-day offend, To Adam it is due ; So am I free, For surely he Will bear my punishment for me.
