MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
Monthly Meeting.
The ordinary monthly meeting of th,e Manawatu County Council was held on Wednesday. Present; Crs. Wilson (chairman), Masters, McKenzie, Henson, Dalton, Kendall, and Barber.
Correspondence was read from the Treasury, informing Council that ;£6oo had been remitted to credit of account for first advance on account of £2OOO loan granted for Council’s share of bridge over Manawatu river at Shannon.
From Department of Roads, re the deviation of Shamion-Foxtoh road, stating that on account of some alteration being necessary, the plan had been returned to' the surveyor for same. From Mr John Stevens, M.P. for Manawatu, stating that he was enquiring into the loan for the Shannon traffic bridge, and stating that when the amount was passed it would be placed to the Council’s credit.
From the Horowhenlia County Council, acknowledging receipt of for the Shannon bridge. From same stating that a conference of objectors to the height of Shannon bridge had met, and in consequence had withdrawn all objections on consideration of trusses on bridge being raised 15 inches. The engineer is now altering plans and instructing work to be done. From Moutoa estate, calling attention to bad state of bridges on Paihaka Road. The following transfer was agreed to: Section 387, Foxton, from B. E. Austin to G. Satherly, Foxton. The Treasurer reported as follows; — . General account, cr., ,£276 is sd; loan account, cr., ,£547 *3 S gd; net credit balance, .£823 15s ad. Amounts available for expenditure i Sandon Riding 13s Mt Stewart 13s nd, Waitohi Amounts over expended: Carnarvon Riding £ll 19s 3d, Kawaid, Awahuri 2s iid, WbirokinoDivision ,£9 16s 9d. The Engineer reported as follows : Awahou Riding: I inspected the road reserve near the Beach where Mr Dalrymple requested permission to erect a gate, and see no objection to a gate being erected across the road reserve, as it is used very little, if any, by the public as a road.
Whirokino Sub-division: Or Barber and I made arrangements with Mr B. G. Gower to let the cleaning out of drain on No. 2 line for 2s per chain or less, if possible, and a portion of the drain along the Whirokino road. Several settlers request that the Government drain be cleaned out, and agree to pay half cost of work. The following is my estimate for constructing drain at the Kaikokopu lakes: £1 13s per chain; estimated value of punt, £lO. The tramway manager reported as follows : —The credit balance for the month was /10 8s id. The volume of traffic dropped considerably during the month, the earnings being only about half of January. The special run in connection with: the Rongotea School excursion realised £ll 16s qd in fares. The total fares for the month were £l7 17s Bd. Wool traffic, 228 bales, making a total of 2012 bales for the season, as compared with 2093 bales last year, a decrease of 81 bales. Timber hauled, 14,600 feet, metal and clay from pit 300 yards. Receipts for February, 13s 8d; expenses, ,£125 5s yd. Balance, 8s id. In reference to the bad state of bridges on Paihaka road in the Moutoa Estate, and also bad state of road, the engineer was instructed to report, Mr T. H. Simpson’s request to get the culvert lowered under the railway line at Oroua Bridge was handed to engineer for report. The clerk was instructed to write tot Mr T. Hirst and others, of Awahuri, re their request to form Kupa Kupa road before the coming winter, saying that no expenditure could be made on a road not vested in the Council. It was decided to allow Mr Dalrymple to erect a gate, as requested, on the road reserve, near the beach in Awahou riding. Messrs Coyle Bros.’ tender was accepted for Kaikokopu drainage contract. The Clerk was instructed to sue for outstanding rates. Accounts' amounting to 3s 3d were passed for payment.
