The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 1908. BUCK-JUMPING TACTICS.
- *—<►— Some one has said that it is possible to do a right thing in a wrong way. This truism was illustrated on Saturday night, •when a combination of buck-jumpers visited Foxton. In order to make their horses buck to reputation, a rope was drawn round their loins, and when the rider took his seat on the pig-skin, the horse was startled by the cracking of a whip, the tightening of the flank rope and sundry yellings, and “ hook-jab-bings.” The animal being thus startled and maddened, set to work —to the delight of the audience ! Whether the practice indulged in can be brought under the heading of cruelty to animals, we are not in a position to say. Certainly, it is not humane. It was this exhibition that roused the indignation of Mr Coley, who is leputed to be a most humane man in his treatment of horses. His intentions last Saturday were good, but the means adopted did not justify the ends, and the sequel was most regrettable. However, we can assure Mr Coley that he is not the only one who has protested against such exhibitions, and we think it is time the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took a hand in the game.
