MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The legular meeting of the above was held at Saudon on Wednesday. Present—Crs J. G. Wilson (chairman), G. Kendall, R. B. McKenzie, J. H. Dalton, Masters. Barber, and Henson.
Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows: —
From Valuation Department, enclosing an account for ,£59 for valuing two ridings—Awahou and Rongotea. From K. W. Dalrymple, asking permission to erect a fence across the road reserve along the telephone line from Foxtou to the Manawatu Heads. —The engineer to report. From M. Noble, Oroua Bridge, asking that Pyke’s road be made fit lor traffic.—Received.
From J. B. Mclntyre, enginedriver, asking permission to withdraw his resignation.—To be given work when two engines are running.
From Horowhenua County Council, asking what steps were being taken to repair the Whirokiuo bridge, and whether the Manawatu Council was prepared to pay its proportion of the cost of the Shannon bridge. The Council did not care to go on with the work without a conference, and it was decided to ask fora conference of the three local bodies interested, to meet on the bridge on a date to be arranged. The tramway manager’s report for January was read and adopted as follows The credit balance for the month was £llß 16s gd, which must be considered satisfactory, seeing that the undermentioned extra items were paid out of earnings:—Wages, overtime, 2s 6d; J. B. Mclntyre, one month, 3s ; truck and sheet hire for one extra week, £7- 3s rod ; haulage of the engine Fox, £ 1 is 1 id; extra coal, is 6d ; total, 12s gd. • The volume of traffic, both in passengers and goods, throughout the month was exceptional. The specials run in connection with races at Bulls and Foxton were well patronised, £67 os 3d being taken in fares. The fares for the month were £79 14s 3d. Wool traffic has been satisfactory, 595 bales being received, as against 456 for the same month last year. A good traffic has also been done in grass seed this year, 99% tons being received, an increase of 82 tons for the same period last year. Timber hauled, 23,900 ft; metal and clay, 340yds. An amount of 2s 6d is due to the running staff for overtime for the month. It is hoped that the engine Fox, at present in Feilding for repairs, will be finished this week.
The Rongotea School Committee have approached me with reference to running a special in connection with a school excursion on the 17 th inst. The fares charged last year were 2s for adults and 2d for children. I quoted the same prices, and would like the Council to confirm same. —Confirmed.
The erection of a new engine shed was left in the hands of the Chairman and tram manager to deal with.
The Overseer, reporting on the Whirokino Subdivision, stated that Mr C. Peterson has completed his contract for supplying and delivering metal on the Whirokino road. There are several drains in this part of the district that require clearing out, and it would be advisable for the Councillor for the Riding to go over them with me and decide which to clean out.
The Treasurer reported the balances on the various accounts as follows: General account, dr., 1.667 18s 4d ; loan account, cr., for expenditure to 31st March, 1908: Sandon, 19s 3d, Mt. Stewart 8s Bd, Waitohi is 7d, Rongotea .£95 13s 3d, Carnarvon £32 6s Bd, Whirokino us gd; Over-expended : Kawa Kawa -C 6B ißsgd, Awahou £B7 8s 1 id.
Accounts to the amount of were passed for payment. Hewitt D. Robinson was appointed registrar of dogs for the County, the fee to be 2s 6d tor sheep and cattle dogs and 5s for other dogs. The following motions were carried :
Moved by Cr McKenzie and seconded by Cr Kendall —That this Council authorise the chairman to agree, if he thinks fit, to contribute towards the cost of the enquiries being made by local bodies as to the best means of dealing with the Manawatu and Oroua rivers, the amount not to exceed Moved by Cr Barber and seconded by Cr Dalton—That the ranger be instructed to impound all stock straying on roads in the Awahou Riding of the County (including Whirokino division). On the motion of Cr Barber, seconded by Cr Dalton—That this Council enter into an agreement with the Foxton Borough Council to allow their ranger to range on the roads in the Awahou Riding up to and including the FoxtonPalmerstbn road as far as Bainesse, and all roads in the Whirokino subdivision.
The following tenders were accepted Contract 24, Campion’s Line, W. Burgess, 4s gd per yard ; 25, Taylor’s Line, W. Burgess 4s 6d per yard ; 33. Sanson, Jones, and Banks, C. H. Petersen,-. 4s 6d per yard.
