CATHOLIC BAZAAR.

The above bazaar was formally opened last night in the Public Hall by Mr John Stevens M.P., under vefy favourable auspices. The object of the bazaar is to raise funds for the erection of a Presbytery at Foxton, and the lady members of the congregation have been working with commendable industry and self sacrifice to this end for months past, and the goods displayed in the various stalls last night, supplemented by generous gilts from friends, was the result ot their labours. When the Catholics make up their'mind to hold a bazaar they carry it through with a thoroughness that does them credit* The stalls were neatly arranged and tastefully 1 decorated and the attendants, one and all, looked charming $n their pretty costumes, ‘ and their, gentle persuasions to. buy; lightened the pockets ot male and female members of the faithful and protestant alike.

Father Gognet had great pleasure and honour in introducing to those present at last night’s opening, their member, Mr J. Stevens, who, no doubt, had a good message for them a}l, and considering his popularity in the district, and his practical < eloquence, they were being given a treat by his consenting to perform the opening ceremony which would also bring , tjie bazaar a promise of good luck. Mt Steven, who was received with a round of applause, said it afforded him much pleasure to have the privilege of being invited here for the purpose of opening the Foxton Grand Catholic Bazaar and he felt it a great honour to have the performing of such an onerous duty at thte important function. He thanked the Rev. Father Gognet for his very kindly introduction to those present and paid a warm tribute to all who had been instrumental in working for the success of this bazaar and also all those, irrespective ot denomination, who devoted themselves and their time and money for the benefit and advancement of the whole community and al.so fox the education of tne younger ones. The object of ‘ the present bazaar, the building of a presbytery, was a very worthy one and he wished it every success. It was pleasing to know that Foxton was not behindhand in such matters. He made amusing reference to Mr T. Bowe’s valuable donation of a magpie to the Bazaar and concluded by wishing them all success in their effort, and declared the Bazaar open. Father Gognet thanked Mr Stevens for his sound practical advice and kinds words and called for three cheers for their member which were given heartily by those representatives of the male sex who were present. The interior of the Hall then bec&ime an animated scene, and business commenced in earnest.
