WANTED—A WATER SUPPLY.

The present spell of dry weather is creating a feeling of uneasiness among householders, who rely upon the house roofs and tanks for water supply. A number of householders are already paying for the carting of water from the river,,- and elsewhere, to their houses. This is a regrettable state of affairs for a town the size and importance of Foxton. unless particular care is taken to keep house gutters, and tanks clean, the water derived from this source becomes contaminated, and rendered almost - unfit for use. A lasting supply for domestic, fire pervention, and sewage purposes can be obtained , from two sources, viz., by boring artesian wells, and erecting reservoirs,' into which ihe water can be pumped, and, secondly, tapping the hills near Shannon. “Bush civil engineers” have ventured opinions as to the cost of the two schemes, but their figures are very vague. It would repay the Council to obtain the services of a competent engineer to go throughly into the question, and present a rieport on the alternate schemes. •We do not think one ratepayer would begrudge the expenditure. In view of this suggestion being carried out, it would be necessary to hold Cr Hennessy’s motion over re calling tenders for sinking artesian wells. In any case, the question of a waiter supply must be forced, as the present existing state of things amounts to a public scandal. Levin, a newlyfledged borough,. has thoroughly discussed this vital question, and is about to sanction a loan of ,£22,000 for a high pressure water supply. Isn’t this enough to put some of our city tahtefs to action ?
