The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13,1908. FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.

The Palmerston Times publishes the following in reference to the proposed Harbour Board for Foxton, the Bill for which purpose has been drafted, and will shortly be placed in the hands of the member for the district The movement on foot for the formation of .a Harbour Board at Foxton is deserving of every support which the people of this district- can give to. it. Palmerston is handicapped from the very fact that it is an inland town, as against the port-of Wellington. At the same time it should be able to overcome this handicap to a large extent, and take a share of the business not only of the districts immediately surrounding; it, but! of•' the. Main Trunk Line. We have said before and we cannot reiterate now with too great insistence, that Wanganui is at the present moment striving, and successfully striving, to secure the North Island Main 1 Trunk trade, which is legitimately the trade of Palmerston, and if the people of Palmerston do not wake up to their responsibility in this matter, they will 'find themselves in a back water. We have the chance, we have only to use our brains, , capital, and enterprise to seize it. The point in favour of ' Wanganui, apart from the enterprise of its people, lies in the possession of a port. Palmerston has a port at Foxton which might be run cheaply, and which would give us the advantage of water carriage. This would always serve as an alternative to the railways, and it is capable of a development which would make it, of value to the -district practically' as far north as Marton. The movement to form a Harbour Board is one of the first steps? in' this direction.”—A very sensibje view of the : position.
