Alister McTavish, who was the prime actor in the sensational affair on the Queen Street wharf, Auckland, the day following-Box-ing Day—by which Herbert Suter, an officer of. the American steamer Quito, narrowly escaped being shot, McTavish afterward turning the revolver upon himself and'inflicting injuries to his head —made his appearance .before Mr Kettle at the police court. He was charged .with the attempted murder of Suitor and subsequent attempt at suicide. After briefly outlining the circumstances, Mr Gordon expressed the opinion that McTavish, who had shown . eccentric behaviour prior to the shopting, was labouring under a slight attack of delirium tremens at the time, of the ; occurrence. Prisoner, who re-, served his defence, was committed or trial.
