The new disciplinary law regarding the sacrament of marriage, decreed by the Pope, under date August 2nd, 1907 will come into operation on Easter Sunday. Clandestine marriages continue to be null and void. Henceforth the marriage must be celebrated in the presence of the pastor of the parochial district in wnich the marriage takes place. The new legislation has special bearing on mixed marriages in which only one of the contracting parties is Catholic. The Church has always set her face against such marriages, and permits them only under certain conditions, and in order to prevent greater evils. Hitherto such mixed marriages, even when celebrated in the Protestant Church, or before the registrar, though condemned and prohibited, were nevertheless valid, and the contracting parties before God and His Church, became truly man and wife. Henceforth, under the new Marriage Eaw, the same presence of the pastor of the parochial district that is required for Catholic marriages will be necessary also for the validity of mixed marriages. Thus, should the case occur of a Catholic and Protestant attempting marriage in ffie registry office or in a Protestant Church, their marriage is null and void, and the contracting parties are no more man and wife in the eyes of ’ the Church than if they had never gone through the marriage ceremony.
