The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JANUARY 25. 1908. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
SON Monday evening next the J ) Cohncil, ;, of ;Jthe. Chamber of Com-, merce will meet to read and discuss the President’s report, which will set . out the data collected by > Mr Hennessey from various sources in reference to Harbour Board matters. Other information will also be presented to the meeting, and a date fixed for the holding of a public meeting, when the information collected by the Chamber will be submitted, and the public of Foxton will be given an opportunity of expressing an opinion as to the desirability or otherwise of having its port - governed by a properly constituted body. The whole question is of the utmost importance to Foxton, and we feel certain that the public meeting will unanimously endorse - the action taken by Ifce Chamber of Commerce. After the, public meeting has been held, a conference will take place with the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce, who are in full sympathy with the pVojept, and the initial steps taken to have the Board establishedThe Railway .Department has been approached: on - several occasions in reference to the erection of a verandah at the local Railway Station. Each; time a polite refusal has been received—the usual formal reply. Does the Minister know anything of the inconvenience the travelling public are put to in rainy weather ? • We are all
aware of the tequiiemeiits uud appointments asked h r by other stations throughout the Dominion, but that ic beside the point. We remind the Mini t rof the amount of revenue per medium of harbour dues, etc., annually drawn from Poxtou, and for which vve get practically nothing in return. Surely, then, we are entitled to more consideration. In a lew days we shall publish the revenue annually drawn by the railway department from the local station. Perhaps the figures will enlighten the Minister, We are sick of being put off with polite formal refusals from the Minister, and we ask him to give our request for a verandah more than passing notice, because Foxton’s requirements have been shelved too often by the Government, and we are full up of such scant attention.
