FOXTON RACING CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING.
SECOND DAY. The meeting was very capably managed by the Secretary and the Stewards. There was only one protest —the only one of the meeting—against Waitapu in the Presidents Handicap, and that was dismissed. The sum of was put through the totalisator, against A'5615 on the second day last year. The total amount of money machined for the two days was against year, an increase of During 1 the two days about sixteen bookmakers paid £2O a day for the privilege of betting, and the Club reaped a distinct monetary benefit of /350 from the metallicians. Duuring the day the race horses Lady Disdain and Highden were put up for sale by auction. Lady Disdain was sold to Mr W. Pine of Christchurch, for and signalised the event by winning the last race for her new owner ; Highden was passed in for the sum of The Jockey Club might, with some advantage to the public, instal the course with a t elephone service, and the sale of race books requires a little moie attention, so that patrons may become possessed of the printed information as soon as possible, instead ot having to hunt all over the course for the “ correct card,” The Club gave very good lunches both days, the catering being in the hands of Messrs - Langley Bros., and the selections of the Foxton Brass Band were much appreciated. There were six starters in the second Hack Hurdle Handicap. Taura was made- favourite with Xavier next in demand. Mount Cook and Mussen were outsiders. Pa:. the stand the first time the 0.... ji was Mount Cook, Brown Bel:, Maidi, Taura, Mussen, with Xavier lasr. At the back of the course Mount Cook was still leading, followed by Maidi, and Xavier still whipping in. The issue was never in doubt, and Mount Cook won easily by two lengths. On her previous [day’s running, Carissima was selected favourite for the January Handicap, but Probability, with Sid' Reid up, .was also well backed. Dear Dolly, who looked very fit, was an outsider with Robin Link. These two assumed the lead and never gave the others a chance, although Reid rode a desperate race on Probability. The President’s Handicap was considered a good thing for Waitapu. It appeared, however, that Waicola, which is in the same stable, was meant to win, but found that she could not do so, and on Aberration becoming dangerous, Waitapu put in a claim and won fairly easy by a length. Wairarapa gelding had a bad run, and had to come up. on the inside where he was partially obstructed by Waicola. A protest entered for obstruction was dismissed. Fight started in the Carnarvon Hack Welter, which provided the greatest race of the day. Mikotahi was made favourite, with Loiret and Scenery next. Prince Hassan who was well backed by his connection was with Loiret and Oryx coming down the straight. The three could have been covered by the proverbial blanket. Reuben made a fine win in the Maiden Hack Scurry, for which Bonnie Doou was favourite out of nine starters. The Carterton owned San Lass, which has never won a race, was well backed with Sid Reid up. Had the mare not got a bad start she - might have won. San Lass is improving considerably and with a liitle more race course tuition she should be a good investment for her owner. With flyers like Lord Soult, Motoa, Kareroa, and Tarina, the Newmarket Handicap was decidedly interesting. Lord Soult and Motoa were the fancy of the public, but there was a good Taranaki investment on Supplement which ran most disappointingly. Motoa won somewhat easily from Supplement, with Kareroa a good third. The Telephone Hack Handicap was a girt to Dear Dolly, who won by lengths in a six horse race. Maid of Astolat had an unfortunate run, but it is doubtful if she could have won in any case. The Motoa Welter, the last race of the day, was won somewhat easily by Lady Disdain, the heavily weighted, The Stake being second. The winner was well ridden by Reid.
