AN AUTOCRATIC MAYOR.
Creates A Deadlock. Palmerston, January 17. An extraordinary situation has occurred in the Palmerston Borough Council. Owing to the Mayor (Mr R. Essex) refusing to accept a resolution proposed by Councillor Haydon, on the ground that it reflected on the Mayor, the meeting held last Tuesday closed with affairs at a deadlock. To-day the Finance Committee refused to sit, and no money was passed for payment, with the result that the borough employees have received no wages. The Mayor addressed the employees, explaining the situation, and it is hoped that affairs will right themselves at a special meeting called for Tuesdav next.
