Nrfw York, January 9. lecturing at Hartford, Connecticut, Captain Hobson, of Santiago Bay renown, declared- “ America has been taking backwater from Japan. Now only one thing remains before war, viz., a pretext. America must refuse to let a crisis arise until her fleet reaches the Far Hast.” Captain Hobson added that it was doubtful if the fleet can ever get there. Considerable indignation is expressed that such jingoism should be indulged in. [Richmond Pearson Hobson was born at Greensboro, Alabama, on August 17, 1870. As an American naval officer, he is noted for his exploit in blowing up the United Slates collier Merrimac in an attempt to block the channel of the harbour of Santiago de Cuba, on June 3, 1898, during the war with Spain. The object was .to bottle an Admiral Cervera’s Spank'S fleet in the harbour. Captain Hobson was promoted Naval Constructor on June 23, 1898, and Captain on February 26, 1906. Ou his return to America after the Merrimac exploit he was mobbed and* kissed by women.]
