MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL .

The usual monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Qouncii was held pa Wednesday, present —Crs J.G. Wilson (Chairman), Masters, McKenzie, Henson,.Barber, Dalton, and Kendall. Stewart, 4s 8d; Waitohi, £& i6s 4d ; Rongotea is; Carnarvon, *44 I Whirokino Division, £6s 103 3d. Amounts over expended: Kawakawa riding, £56 J4 S 4°l > Awahou, £fS 10s sd. The overseer reported an, tne bridges in the county to be m good order, with the following exceptions. No. 11, Foxton-Sandon road condemned and to be rebuilt as soon as possible; bridge_No. 13, Foxton-Sandoh road, at ' Hartley’s not in very gbbd order, requires building chortly. From John Stevens, ■; M.P., acknowledging receipt of letter re Whirokino bridge, stating that he concurred with the Council $ reading of the Act, but the Crown Law Officers held a different opinion and the department had no alternative but to decline the application ; they were willing, however, to entertain an application under section 119 of the Act. A letter from the Chief'Engineer on the same subject stated that it was held that section 119 of the Act only referred to new works, but a warrant would be issued under section 119, if certain preliminaries were complied with. From Department of Roads, authorising the expenditure of for the completion of the road between Oroua Bridge and Foxton. It was decided to call tenders for 650 yds metalling on the Awahou Riding, and 210 yds on the Whirokino Riding. The tender Of C v Peterson, at 4s 3d per yard, was "accepted for metalling Whirokino Road. Thos. Nye notified the Council that he had lowered the royalty on metal from 8d to 6d per yard? From the Feilding Borough Council, stating that Crs Goodbe- - here, Atkinson,’ and Fitzherbeit Tia.t been appointed to attend the conference at Palmerston in connection with river control.—Crs Wilson, McKenzie and Barber were appointed from this Council. Accounts totalling were passed for payment. ; Some discussion took place'upon a suggestion by Cr Barber that burdock should be deleted from the Noxious Weeds Act. Cr, Barber said, and other councillors agreed, that the plant did not spread, ;and ■was only found in the vicinitybTa bush. At present settlers are liable to prosecution if the plait is 1 found on their properties. The Chairman, after a perusal of the statutes, said that as far as he could see, the Council was powerless in the matt*. There was no provision that he could find whereby the plant could be taken from the list. It was decided to farther investi- . gate the matter.
