The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JAN. 7. 1908. THE PORT OF FOXTON.
MrP. Hennessy, who was delegated by the local Chamber of Commerce to investigate the sources of revenue and expenditure of certain harbour boards in different parts of the Dominion, recently visited Patea, Wanganui, and Waitara. He was treated with the utmost courtesy by the Board officials, and has collected a mass of data which will be of the greatest importance at the forthcoming conference to discuss the advisability of forming a Harbour Board to control the local shipping and river. Dr Mandl and Mr R. Moore have also been digging up useful information. We are not at liberty at present to publish the data collected, but we are privileged to say this, that the Foxton port is one of the most neglected and indifferently conducted institutions in the Dominion. Investigations made elsewhere, which we shall publish at an early date, have been an “ eye-opener,” and have revealed the fact that a new system of control for the local port is an urgent necessity.
