CRICKET.
To commemorate the opening of the new cricket ground situate on the property of Messrs CJeland Bros., the Moutoa Club, in conjunction with Shannon, invited a team from Foxton to play a friendly match on Boxing Day. A concrete pitch has been laid down, and the only drawback to it at present is the out field, which is very rough. Foxton (Captain Stiles) ha\ing won the toss, elected to bat first, and put up the fair score of 108. Wells played a fine and free innings of 44, and Woods scored creditably with 23. The total ought to have been higher, but too much ’Xmas pudding the day before brought on an attack of “ the slows,” only one run being recorded where two could easily haye been obtained. Clark bowled well. *■ Moutoa replied with 86. The genial Jim Puti, with 17, being the highest scorer. Had he not run himself out at a critical period, his side probably would have won. W. Tremewan (15), L. Randall (n), and J, Walden (10 not out), were the other principal scorers. The Foxton bowling was somewhat weak, and as their catching was faulty, it was no wonder their opponents got so near them. Stiles, however, made some amends by his smart wicketkeeping. One of the Shannon men had three lives in three balls, a record for the ground. Foxton, in their second venture, made 85. An ex-Foxtonite, Len Furrie, made 17, W. Nye top notcher 19, and Wells, Stiles, and Stalker, not out, each contributed 10. Oswald Cleland bowled very creditably. As the innings terminated at 6.15, it was found impossible to finish the match which was consequently decided on the first innings in favour of Foxton, by 18 runs. The visiting team, at the end of the innings, sat down to a very choice cold collation prepared by the ladies of Moutoa, and at the conclusion of the Moutoa innings were regaled with afternoon tea. The hospitatliy was suitably acknowledged on behalf of the visitors, who joined in three hearty cheers. Two old cricketers, in' the persons of Messrs C. Hunt and Reade, carried out the onerous duties of umpires, and evidently gave satisfaction. The weather was perfect for cricket, and there was a large attendance. A hope was expressed that it would become an annual fixture. A special word of praise must be accorded to Messrs Clelands for their desire to foster cricket at Moutoa by letting the Club have the use of their land.
