IRISH AFFAIRS.

Eondon, Dec. 21. The Eand Judges Court at Dublin has ordered that Mr Eaurence Giunell, Nationalist M.P. for Wesmeath North, who did not appear, be arrested and imprisonedfor six months for contempt of Court. In connection with a speech made by Mr Ginnell at Kilskyre, Mr Justice Ross, of the High,Court of Justice, decided that it must be regarded as a crime. He wished it to be clearly understood that this prosecution had not been undertaken at the instance of the Irish Government. “ The cattle-driving movement,” Mr Justice Ross declared, “ has demoralised the people to an extent unequalled within my memory. Wrong-doers laugh at the authorities’ futile efforts, and the King’s subjects no longer have confidence in the efficacy of the law to protect their property and liberty. “In the present case,” the Judge continued “ the defendant has dared to turn the swollen tide of lawlessness and violence upon an estate that is under the Court’s immediate protection.” Ministerial Denunciation. Cattle-driving to be put down. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Asquith, speaking at Aberdeen, said cattle-driving was reprehensive and peculiarly unpatriotic, tending as it did to cripple one of Ireland’s most important industries. It must, and would, be put down.
