CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A meeting of the Council of the. Chamber of Commerce was held in the Secretary’s Office on Thursdaynight; Present: Messrs Hennessy, (Chairman), Perreau, Dr Mandl - > Rimmer, Alex. Ross, and the Secretary (Mr Rae -Howard)! Correspondence was read from the Palmerston N. Chamber of Commerce, stating that a meeting' of the Chamber would be held ' after the holidays, re conference - to discuss the formation of a Harbour Board at Foxton. The letter also stated that the Chamber was favourable to the formation of a Board. - . : v :j
Dr Mandl said it was pleasing to know definitely that the Palmer- - * ston Chamber would support the ■■■ £ movement initiated by the Foxton ▼ Chamber. He suggested that all '£ the necessary data. be collected by-' " members of the local Council, prior to the conference. The Chairman (Mr Hermessy) said it was his intention to visit Patea during the holidays, and he would endeavour to obtain information in reference to the Harbour Board there, and the sources of its revenue, etc, etc.
Dr Mandl said Mr Hermessy’s proposed visit to Patea would be very helpful to the local Chamber. The speaker had held a lengthy ■ consultation with Mr Moore, and ; . the latter had expressed'his. willingness to do all in his ‘power to assist the Chamber in bringing a"T~ Harbour Board into existence. He stated that Mr Moore’s legal knowledge would also be of great assistance. •
Members expressed their appreciation of Mr Moore’s offer, and appointed him honorary solicitor in the meantime.
A letter was read from the member for the district, .informing the Chamber that the Government,v were prepared to subsidise £ for £ up to ,£SO for planting at the ’ ’ Sanatorium.—Members expressed '> disappointment that the Government had not made a grant as no subsidy had been asked,il for. It was decided to write to" the Marine Department suggest- ' ing that they protect their own property at the beach, by .planting, etc.
The Chairman was delegated to > obtain information from-the Patea , Harbour Board, re working of the harbour and wharf, etc.
Mr Rian me r again brought up the necessity tor the erection of a verandah at the local railway station. It was decided to bring the matter under the notice of the District Traffic Manager. It was also decided to point out the danger to passengers through trains stopping on the Oroua. Bridge. . The Chairman remarked that if passengers stepped in ignorance, at night, from the carriage platform when the train pulled up on , the bridge, it would be a drop into ? eternity. The bridge required' decking, or else the train should be • 1 pulled up elsewhere. 1 Mr Ross suggested that tha De- 1 partment be also approached in reference to a more convenient train service from Foxton to Wellington.
The President’s unexplained absence was commented upon, and other matters of minor importance discussed before the Council rose.
