The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, DEC. 21, 1907. ORCHARD PESTS.
Some time ago Mr S. H. Baker wrote to the member for the district, suggesting that more strict supervision should be exercised with respect to orchard pests in the neighbourhood of Foxton. On the 17th inst., Mr Baker received a letter in reply from Mr Stevens, who had communicated with the Minister of Agriculture on the subject. The Minister in his letter stated that it was intended last season to take stringent measures against people who neglected their orchards, but, owing to the outbreak of fruit fly, it was found necessary to utilise the energies of all the Inspectors in keeping a careful watch on the infected areas. The Minister concluded by stating that instructions have, however, since been given to enforce the Act as strictly as possible, and where necessary to apply for authority to prosecute for noncompliance with the Act. This notification should serve as a final reminder to all persons who have neglected their fruit trees. .
