The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, DEC. 3, 1907. THE PEANUT BRIGADE.
The pit, at the local Public Hall last night, was taken possession of by the “peanut brigade.” The cracking of the shells, followed by the crunch, crunch of the nuts, interspersed with grunts of appreciation and heavy breathing, accompanied each item. Different nationalities adopt peculiar forms of expressing their approval of public performances, but Foxton’s peanut brigade takes the cake. Fancy the feelings of the male and female performers last night as they faced the malodorous —sorry we can’t use a more expressive adjective—footlights and upwards of too perpetual-motion-iron-jawed crunchers. No wonder the charming young monologue entertainer started off at the wrong verse! Can you blame the baby for exercising its lungs as a protest against the crunch, crunch of the peanut brigade ? —a noise for all the world like the tramp of an infantry regiment along a macadamised road. One person had the audacity to suggest that Harry Quealey’s charming countenance was too much for the infant, but if the baby could only speak it would deny the soft impeachment. We understand that the shells which Caretaker Morley gathers from the floor of' this ancient building, keeps him in fuel through the winter! Hoorah for the Peanut Brigade !
