THE GERM OF LIFE.

Mr Jacques Loeb, professor of physiology at the University of California, has issued a bulletin from the office of the President of the University of California, in which it is stated that the life germ can be discovered, providing the chemical reaction surrounding the process of fertilisation can be investigated. Professor Loeb says : —“All that differentiates living matter from machines I have produced in the university laboratory is the power to animate objects to develop and reproduce themselves automatically. All that is necessary, therefore, is to discover the chemical process which causes the development of the egg in embryo, and the answer to the question, What is living matter ? will be the answer to what determines the phenomena of the automatic development of reproduction.’’ The professor adds that he has not had time to complete his experiments to discover the germ of life, but thinks that he is on the right path. The announcement is regarded by university scientists as a distinct step towards producing livingmatter from inanimate.
