MANSLAUGHTER.
Auckland, November 21. At the Supreme Court this afternoon, before Mr Justice Denniston, Peti Watene, a young-looking Maori woman, was placed upon her trial, charged with the murder of her husband, Watene Rahane. When the charge was read over to the prisoner, she replied: “I had been drinking.” It was stated that the prisoner, when arrested, said to the constable that she had struck her husband with a bridle, and that she did so because he called her bad names. It was clear that prisoner caused the death of her husband. The jury returned a verdict of guilty of manslaughter with a strong recommendation to mercy. Accused was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
