EDUCATION BOARD.

Wanganui, This Day.

The ordinary meeting of the Board was held last night. Present: Messrs Pirani (Chairman), Bennett, Cargill, Fraser, Guthrie, Dixon, Purnell, Smith, and Spurdle. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to xßs. Resignations: A. E. Watts, Kimbolton ; F. M. Fitness, Eltham ; W. H. Hutchinson, Whakamara. Applications for leave of absence was granted with pay to a number of teachers. Mr Amos, of Feilding District High School, tendered his resignation as first assistant and director of technical education for the southern district. The lyOngburn school residence w r as reported by Mr Bennett to be unfit for human habitation, and he recommended a new building. After considerable discussion, it was decided that the drainage of Campbell St., Eltham, and Feilding Schools should be put in hand at once. The urgency of this matter was strongly advocated by Messrs Bennett, Fraser, Purdell, and Dixon. The Foxton School Committee requested the Board to allow them the old teacher’s residence for use of school cleaner. The application was refused, and Mr Fraser was requested to make arrangements for letting same for the Board. The Wanganui School Committee asked the Board to reduce the school hours, so that religious instruction may be given for half an hour each week. On the resolution of Mr Fraser, it was decided to inform the Committee that the Board cannot consent to any reduction of school hours.

Resolved that the next meeting of the Board be held on 12th December, at 9 a.m. The Education Board then sat as a Board of College Governors. It was resolved to ask Dr Findlay, Attorney-General, to officiate at the annual presentation of prizes on 12th December.

Decided to appoint a third music teacher at a salary of per annum.
