A girl for domestic duties is advertised for.-

Mr G. Langley advertises for 100 pairs of good table poultry. At the local Court on Monday last, before Alex Cockburn, J.P., James Wilson was fined 5s for drunkenness.

An advertiser has a buggy for sale to seat six people. The vehicle is in splendid repair and [is offered at a bargain price.

A meeting of the local school committee will be held in Mr Frankland’s (the Secretary’s) residence this evening at 8 o’clock.

Mr George Hutchison, formerly M.H.R. for Patea, has returned to New Zealand, and will probably be a candidate at the election. The seat Mr Hutchison will contest is not yet announced.

Constables Woods and Dickson yesterday afternoon arrested three men named William McManus, Frank Coyle, and Peter Petersen, for drunkenness. They were brought before Mr P. Hennessy, J. P., this morning and fined 10s each and ordered to leave the town forthwith.

Three new residences are in course of erection in Thynne Street for Mrs Wanklyn, Mrs Robinson and Mr J, W. Rough. Mr Thos. Rimmer is building the two latter and Mr Ward the first named. Mr Alex. Speirs is completng a residence in the same street for Mr Hornblow.

A telegram from New Plymouth states that the death occurred on Sunday ot Mrs Rawson, aged seventy-three years, daughter of Rev. John Whiteley, who was massacred at White Cliffs, and widow of Dr F. F. Rawson, a leading practitioner of Taranaki forty years ago.

Mrs Hamer, ot the Economic, has just received a beautiful assortment of runners, cushion covers, fancy table cloths, brush and comb bags, etc., etc., which she bought at exceptionally low prices, being a lot of travellers’ samples. The same are being shown in window.*

The dead body of an elderly man named F. Jackson was discovered in a fireplace at Ranrimn on Thursday, death having apparently been caused by a powerful explosive, as the whole of his head was shattered, and his features were unrecognisable. It is supposed to be a case ot suicide.

The body of the man Charles Mitchell, who was drowned at Oroua Bridge some time ago, was discovered by a resident in the locality among some willows on the river bank . yesterday. An inquest will be held at Oroua Bridge to-day, before Captain Mowlem, coroner.

The Foxton Borough Band will give an al fresco concert on the river bank on Sunday afternoon next, at 3 o’clock, when a collection will be taken up in aid of Mr Robinson, who had the misfortune to break his leg through tailing from his horse some time since. The programme will appear in Saturday's issue.

A very enjoyable concert, held under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church, took place at Oroua Bridge last night, and was listened to by a large and appreciative audience. The contributors to the programme comprised the following from Palmerston : Mesdames Hall, T. P. Henderson, Misses Bett (2), Simpson, Martin, Osborne, Messrs T. P. Henderson, Burnard, Young, and Fraser ; and the following from Foxton : Misses Furrie, Aitken, Foster, Messrs Betty, Bullard, T. Henderson, J. Hornblow and Spring. The Rev. Mr Aitken presided. At the conclusion of the concert the Oroua ladies entertained the visitors most hospitably.

Mr Bright, optician, of Palmerston N., may be consulted at Whyte’s Hotel this afternoon and evening.

The death is announced from Dunedin of Mr Maurice Joel, in his ygth year. An effort is to be made to erect a new Anglican Church in Palmerston, and an endeavour is to be made to raise before Hasten

Messrs P. H. Rae-Howard and Co. will sell at their mart on Saturamong other things, a new range, and a fine selection of wall papers. The North Canterbury Education Board, at its meeting yesterday, severely and adversely criticised the School Journal. The gold now in transit to New York, with what was imported, amounts to 52 million dollars. Two New York banks have cancelled orders for two million dollars’ worth.

Mr Cornwall, music teacher, has now taken up his residence in Foxton, in Mrs Geo, Nye’s late residence (opposite Easton’s) Norbitonßd.,and will commence his profession as a teacher of music on Monday next. The operetta, “ Flower Queen,” was staged at Eevin last night by Foxton amateurs (who had been coached by Mrs Young), to a very fair house. The audience thoroughly appreciated the production, which went off without a hitch.

At the inquest on James Glassford, who was burnt to death in a loose box at Waverley late last Saturday night, the verdict of the jury was misadventure. All that remained of the charred body was the trunk. The skull, arms, and legs were missing. There are only two specimens of dried tattooed Maori heads in New Zealand, and both are in the Auckland Museum. Only one of these is a good specimen. The value of such a relic is set down at £6O for a reasonably well-preserved specimen.

The second reading of the Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Act Amendment was read a second time in the House last night. This repeals a clause in the Act of 1904, which allows non-compliance with an order for the restitution of conjugal rights as a ground for divorce.

On Tuesday afternoon the Native Minister received a deputation of Maori chiefs, regarding the Maori Band Bill, Mr Carroll expressed the opinion that the Bill was directed to secure the best interests of the natives. At a meeting of chiefs yesterday it was decided to vigorously oppose any attempt to pass the Bill into law before the Maori race had time to fully consider it. At Wellington yesterday, William Walter Burgess, aged 18, charged with having set fire to a Chinaman’s outhouse in Haining Street, was brought before Mr Justice Button. Prisoner was admitted to probation for two years, and ordered to pay costs. At a meeting of the creditors of John Sterling, storekeeper, of Raurimu, the Official Assignee stated that debtor disappeared in October last with his wife and belongings, leaving liabilities of and assets estimated at about £4OO. A warrant had been issued for his arrest. The Premier moved the second reading of the Parliamentary and Executive Titles Bill in the House last night, which, in consequence of the proclamation of New Zealand as a Dominion, abolishes the title of Colonial Treasurer, substituting “Minister of Finance,’’ alters the Colonial Secretary’s title to “Minister of ' Internal Affairs,” and changes the designation of members of the House of Representatives from M.H.R. to M.P. The Premier supplemented this brief explanation with the remark that no one outside the Dominion would understand from the initials “M.H.R.” that the possessor was a member of Parliament. The second reading was agreed to.
