A WEDDING ROMANCE.

The course of true love never did run smooth, says the Auckland Star. The truth of this adage was brought home the other afternoon to a sprightly y r oung couple whose ages total 110. They had come up froma coastal district, the bridegroom to be, a widower of 58, the bride-elect a widow of 52, for the purpose of having another shot at matrimony. The ceremony was duly performed, and then they began to stride the ruts in the path. F'rom the registry office they hied them to the meanest canteen, and began to celebrate their happy union. They celebrated frequently and copiously until the time came to depart for the country, where the honeymoon was to be spent, and to the railway station they accordingly made their way. But the bride’s potations had been to deep, and while the unsuspected groom was purchasing the tickets an unromantic policeman came along, and, interrupting her honeymoon, carried her off to the lock-up. The distracted husband ascertained the whereabouts of hjs better half, and by this time his aggregate finances had been reduced to ss, an altogether inadequate sum to bail her out. Alone and friendless he was in a sad quandary' until he related his tale of woe to a sympathetic stranger, from whom he borrowed sufficient to free his spouse, and the re-united couple lost no time in getting out of town. M No appearance,” was the response of the orderly' when her name was called from the charge sheet, and the magistrate disposed of the case with a fine of ss.
